Slot-die coating is a meniscus-guided thin film deposition technique in which a liquid solution is delivered through a narrow slot onto a moving substrate, forming a continuous, uniform wet film that dries or cures to give the final coating layer. Unlike spin coating, slot-die coating is a highly material-efficient process with very low waste, and it is easily scalable from small research samples to large-area or roll-to-roll production. These characteristics make it one of the preferred methods for depositing functional thin films in photovoltaic, battery, and display device research and manufacturing.
The key parameters in slot-die coating include the coating speed, the gap between the die and the substrate, the flow rate of the ink, and the rheological properties of the formulation. Precise control of these variables enables the deposition of films with thicknesses ranging from a few nanometres to hundreds of micrometres with excellent uniformity across the coated area. PhotonExport, as the authorised distributor of FOM Technologies systems in Spain and Portugal, is uniquely positioned to offer expert advice on slot-die coating process development and to supply the equipment needed to implement it at any scale.
